What does the smoke from your tailpipe means?

While we do not normally pay heed to this, it is very important to know what the smoke from the tailpipe means. After all, they come in a few different colours – black, white and blue.

Now, before your next drive goes up in smoke, we urge that you have a quick check. Below we present to you the car exhaust colour coding to help you determine your next move.

Car Exhaust Smoke Colours

Colour: Light or Thin White
Diagnosis: Normal
Reason: This happens because condensation naturally collects in the exhaust system.
Action: As this is common in all cars, let it be.

Colour: Blue or Grey
Diagnosis: Not normal
Reason: This means there is likely an oil leak and your engine is burning oil.
Action: As the leak could be caused by several issues like leaking valve seals, damaged piston rings, or worn cylinder walls, it is time to seek a qualified technician’s expertise.

Colour: Black
Diagnosis: Not normal
Reason: This happens when the car is burning too much fuel.
Action: As this could be caused by a clogged air filter, malfunctioning fuel injection system, a blocked manifold, or a variety of other issues, you need a qualified technician to do something about it.

Colour: Persistent, thick white or grey
Diagnosis: Not normal
Reason: This could mean there is a leaking head gasket.
Action: Before your engine overheats and leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere, pay your mechanic a visit.

Whether it is an oil leak repair, a coolant check, an engine tune-up or something else, you have to act fast. Waiting too long could cost you in repairs.
