YEAR 1985 – SAGA

The Proton Saga was launched on 9 July 1985. It is based on the 1983 Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore platform and powered by the 1.3-litre 4G13 Orion II engine. The price respectively was around RM17,575 for 1.3S & RM19,005 for 1.5S.

Trivia: In January 1987, Proton introduced the 1.5-litre 4G 15-powered Saga saloon. 

YEAR 1993 – WIRA

The Proton Wira, the Malay hero was in a 5 years development stage before it was successfully launched on June 1993. It is based on the 1992 Mitsubishi Lancer platform. The production of Wira ended in the year 2009.

The Proton Satria is Malaysia’s first 3-door hatchback car. It was known as Proton Compact in the United States of America. Proton Putra and Proton Perdana were subsequently launched. Proton Perdana was also the first local car to compete against international brands such as Toyota’s Camry, Honda’s Accord and Nissan’s Cefiro.

YEAR 1996 – TIARA 

Known to be the cheapest car in Malaysia back then, Tiara mimicked the Citroen AXs.

Continuum of the Perdana launched earlier, the first generation of Proton Perdana also became the first local car to be offered anti-lock braking system (ABS) and cruise control.

Trivia: The Proton Perdana V6 was used extensively by the Royal Malaysia Police.


Known as the Champion MPV (Multipurpose Vehicle), the Juara was Proton’s first non-saloon, hatchback and coupe model. Priced around RM49,200 at the launch, the multipurpose car was sought after by buyers who are seeking versatility and practicality.
